Welcome to Foglight for Storage Management

Foglight® for Storage Management is a monitoring solution for virtual environments utilizing physical storage to provide metrics and alerts for: performance, capacity, and topology. With Foglight for Storage Management, virtualization administrators can visualize their entire virtual to physical storage environment through detailed architectural representations. Out-of-the-box alerts provide the ability to predict, diagnose, and resolve problems affecting performance, capacity, and availability, while allowing storage administrators to visualize the consumers of storage and impacts to changes. Foglight® for Storage Management enables organizations to better manage their underlying physical storage for optimal virtual infrastructure performance, and reduce data gathering time with end-to-end visibility to quickly ascertain root cause.

These Release Notes cover the resolved issues, known issues, workarounds, and other important information about the 4.6.5 release of Foglight® for Storage Management. Review all sections before starting the installation.

32-bit installers

Support for Foglight for Storage Management on 32-bit platforms has been discontinued since version 4.5.5. You must upgrade to a 64-bit platform before installing or upgrading to FSM 4.6.5.

Installation failed when install Foglight/FVE/FSM with embedded DB to Windows %PROGRAMFILES% dir.

If both valid and invalid credentials are provided for the system to be monitored, it is possible for the valid credential to not be found or used. The invalid credential should be manually deleted in this case.

VFGLS-3397 NetApp System-api-list calls made to determine what other API calls are available may trigger log messages on the NetApp system regarding access permission on the NetApp console. Foglight for Storage Management does not call these other API methods.

VFGLS-2214

NetApp filers can be configured for both SSLv3 and TLS connections. As a result of recent security changes in Java, the agent will no longer, by default, attempt SSLv3 connections when monitoring these systems. If a secure connection is required, it is strongly recommended that TLS be enabled for the filer. To enable SSLv3 connections to the filer, edit the file "jre/lib/security/java.security" from the agent manager hosting the agent monitoring the filer, remove or comment out the line jdk.tls.disabledAlgorithms=SSLv3, and restart the agent manager.

Upgrading with Foglight for Storage Management

Before you begin, review the licensing notes for your currently installed version.

 

During this upgrade process, Foglight for Storage Management is upgraded to version 4.6.5, and the Foglight for Virtualization cartridges are upgraded to the versions released in FVE 8.8.5, and Foglight is upgraded to version 5.9.4. The Foglight Agent Manager will be upgraded to version 5.9.4.

To upgrade Foglight for Storage Management:

  1. Download the Foglight for Storage Management 4.6.5 installation package for your platform from Quest Support.
  2. Obtain updated Foglight for Storage Management 4.6.5 license. To purchase a full license, contact your Foglight sales representative.
  3. Create a support bundle from your Management Server. For instructions, see "Managing Support Bundles" in the Administration and Configuration Help.
  4. Back up Foglight by backing up the file system and the Foglight database. For instructions, see "Backing up Foglight" in the Administration and Configuration Help.
    Important: If you are using Oracle RAC, you must back up the oracle-ds.xml file (or any other database connection files) before performing the upgrade.
  5. Deactivate all agents from the Administration > Agents > Agent Status dashboard.
  6. Stop the Management Server. To verify that all Management Server processes have stopped, type the following command (replacing the default installation directory Quest_Software with your installation directory):
    tasklist /v | find "Quest_Software"
    Important: If your Management Server uses an external database, do not stop the database. It is important that it continue to run during the upgrade.
  7. If you are running the upgrade using a user ID with domain administer privileges run the following command before proceeding with the upgrade:
    ICacls [foglight_home]\state\PostgreSQL-data /t /grant [domain]\administrator:(OI)(CI)F
    Where [domain]\administrator is a local or domain administrator.
  8. Launch the installation package for your platform and choose Upgrade. Follow the instructions in the installation wizard.
    Note : The database upgrade may be time consuming if you have a large topology.
  9. Upgrade any external Agent Managers (the internal Agent Manager is upgraded automatically). For instructions, see the Foglight for Virtualization, Enterprise Edition Upgrade Guide.
  10. After deploying the new storage agents to an agent manager, the agent manager baseline.jvmargs.config file, if it has been customized previously, may need to be updated. Specifically:

    1. Any memory settings under 3 Gb can be removed.
    2. Any memory settings over 3 Gb should be reduced by 3 Gb

    The storage agent now includes support for dynamic memory settings and the previous memory settings in baseline.jvmargs.config are not needed. The amount of memory used for storage agents will be adjusted automatically as more agents are brought online.

  11. Install the updated Foglight for Storage Management 4.5.5 license.
  12. Upgrade the Storage Management Agents from the Storage & SAN > Storage Environment > Administration dashboard, for each Agent Manager Host shown in the Storage Collector Agents view.
    For instructions, see "Deploying Storage Agents after an Upgrade" in the Managing Storage in Virtual Environments Installation and Configuration Guide.

    The upgrade dialog will:

  13. Upgrade the VMware Performance Agent. For instructions, see "Upgrading the VMware Performance Agent" in the Foglight for Virtualization, Enterprise Edition Upgrade Guide.
  14. If you had enabled the trial license for Foglight for Virtualization EE 7.x before upgrading, and you want to use Foglight for Virtualization EE features after upgrading, you may also need to upgrade some additional agents. For instructions, see the Foglight for Virtualization, Enterprise Edition Upgrade Guide.

Note: Foglight for Storage Management requires a 64-bit Windows® or Linux® Agent Manager.

Product licensing

Foglight includes a licensing capability that restricts access to those features that are defined in the license. Any Management Server installation requires a license that grants access to server-specific parts of the browser interface and the features associated with them. Foglight cartridges are also license-protected. While some cartridges are covered by the base Foglight license (such as Foglight Agent Manager cartridges and the Cartridge for Infrastructure), others may require an additional license.

Foglight for Virtualization, Enterprise Edition and Foglight for Storage Management are licensed separately. Note the following:

No matter which package you download and install, when the licenses for both products are activated, the features and functionality of the final installed solution are identical.

 

To activate a trial or a purchased commercial license:

  1. On the navigation panel, under Dashboards, click Administration > Setup > Manage Licenses.
  2. Click Install.
  3. In the Install License dialog box, click Browse.
  4. In the file browser that appears, specify the location of the license file.
  5. In the Install License dialog box, click Install License.

 


Getting started with Foglight for Storage Management

Installation instructions

Foglight for Storage Management is typically installed using a package installer that includes Foglight for Virtualization, Enterprise Edition. For information about installing Foglight for Storage Management, see the Foglight for Storage Management Installation Guide.

Note: Both products require Management Server 5.9.4, which is included in the installer.

While not recommended, it is possible to install the Foglight for Storage Management cartridge in a general Foglight installation. However you must upgrade to Foglight 5.9.4 before installing the cartridge, which may affect other installed cartridges. You may want to consult Professional Services before attempting this upgrade.

To install the Foglight for Storage Management cartridge in a Foglight installation:

  1. Upgrade to Foglight 5.9.4. For instructions, see the Foglight Upgrade Guide.
  2. Upgrade the Foglight for Virtualization, Enterprise Edition cartridges to compatible versions. For a list of cartridges and instructions, see the Foglight for Virtualization, Enterprise Edition Upgrade Guide.
  3. Install and enable the ManagedTopologyService cartridge.
