Getting started with Foglight Capacity Director
Foglight® Capacity Director delivers complete virtual infrastructure capacity life cycle management, spanning planning, allocation, optimization, and maintenance. Get deep insight into your environment, including the availability and estimated time left for CPU, memory, storage, and IOPs. Use historical trends to better forecast resource requirements for clusters, hosts, and workloads—and proactively predict and budget for capital expenditures. Optimize resource utilization and reduce operational expenses by rebalancing the distribution of clusters and workloads. Model your infrastructure changes (add, move, or remove clusters, hosts, and VMs) before deployment, to avoid bottlenecks, performance issues, or reaching the system’s capacity limits. Foglight Capacity Director also includes the Foglight Capacity Manager in the VMware and Hyper-V environments.
These Release Notes cover the resolved issues, known issues, workarounds, and other important information about the 5.7.5 release of Foglight Capacity Director. Review all sections before starting installation.
This 5.7.5 release of Foglight Capacity Director accompanies the release of Foglight for Virtualization, Enterprise Edition 8.7.5. It contains the following new features and improvements:
The following is a list of issues addressed and enhancements implemented in this release.
|Fixed issue where the Next button did not appear on the Scenario Modeler dashboard.|
|Foglight Capacity Manager in VMware environments did not switch to the corresponding dashboard occasionally, after clicking the Migration Modeler tab.|
The following is a list of issues known to exist at the time of this release.
|TORCD-2286||IllegalArgumentException is thrown by chance when clicking the Current Capacity tab.|
|TORCD-2178||The value of Can Fit Count in the VM - Cluster / Host Selector dialog box is inconsistent between the Current Capacity and Changes and DRS Rules tabs.|
|TORCD-2170||The performance score of VM/ESX host/Cluster is calculated every 15 minutes.|
|TORCD-2101||The Host Requirement - Average Host Size chart disappears, after generating a Host and Workload report.|
|TORCD-2082||The value Running VMs in the Current Capacity > Clusters table is refreshed after four hours, so it is not consistent with the value in vSphere client.|
If the agent has not collected vCenter data for a few days, NullPointer exception occurs when the user navigates to the Server Purchase tab.
Workaround: The NullPointer exception will be fixed after the data collection is resumed.
|The data in the Resource Utilization tab is not updated after changing the value of Average Analysis Period from 1 day to 30 days.|
|The number of Running VMs in the Current Capacity tab is not updated after a VM has run on a vCenter for 40 minutes.|
|The values of Time to Full and Recommendations are incorrect after selecting planned changes, if the Growth Rate Per Week is a negative value.|
If the Foglight Capacity Management version 126.96.36.199 or older is installed on the
Foglight Management Server, there are two Capacity Management tabs in the VMware
environment after installing Foglight Capacity Director.
Workaround: Upgrade the Foglight Capacity Management cartridge to version 188.8.131.52 before installing the latest version of Foglight Capacity Director.
|Because there is no historical data about the storage usage when a new VMware agent is created, the data analysis in the Resource Utilization view is not accurate in the beginning.|
Foglight Capacity Director 5.7.5 requires Management Server version 5.9.2, and Foglight Agent Manager version 5.9.2. It also requires Foglight for VMware version 5.7.5.

Foglight includes a licensing capability that restricts access to those features that are defined in the license. Any Management Server installation requires a license that grants access to server-specific parts of the browser interface and the features associated with them. Foglight cartridges are also license-protected. While some cartridges are covered by the base Foglight license (such as Foglight Agent Manager cartridges and Foglight for Infrastructure), others may require an additional license.
Foglight Capacity Director provides a license for free 30-day trial. While Foglight Capacity Manager does not require a license, it works with Foglight Capacity Director and the data collected by Foglight for VMware, and therefore requires that these products are installed and licensed.
To activate a trial or a purchased commercial license:
