Getting Started with Foglight for Storage Management

About Dell

Welcome to Foglight for Storage Management

Foglight for Storage Management is a monitoring solution for virtual environments utilizing physical storage to provide metrics and alerts for: performance, capacity, and topology. With Foglight for Storage Management, virtualization administrators can visualize their entire virtual to physical storage environment through detailed architectural representations. Out-of-the-box alerts provide the ability to predict, diagnose, and resolve problems affecting performance, capacity, and availability, while allowing storage administrators to visualize the consumers of storage and impacts to changes. Foglight for Storage Management enables organizations to better manage their underlying physical storage for optimal virtual infrastructure performance, and reduce data gathering time with end-to-end visibility to quickly ascertain root cause.

These Release Notes link to the Release Notes for each component in the bundled solution. Review all notes before starting the installation.

Known Issues

The following is a list of issues known to exist at the time of this release. To review known issues for the installed components, see the release notes for each component (see New in this Release).

High Availability Mode

Defect ID

Known Issue

FGL-15794

After activating the trial license on the primary server, when a secondary server takes over, the trial license is not enabled on the secondary server.

Workaround: Dynamically added licenses are not synchronized across HA servers automatically. Restart all secondary Management Servers after adding or changing licenses

VFGLS-996

The VMware menus are missing from the navigation panel.

Workaround: This is a symptom of FGL-15794. Restart the secondary server. Verify that all cartridges licensed for Foglight for Storage Management are enabled. StorageCollector.car may need to be enabled manually. If the menus are still missing, restart the primary server.

VFGLS-987

After activating the Foglight for Storage Management trial license from Foglight for Virtualization EE, unable to create a Storage agent. The Storage Device Setup Wizard displays an error.

Workaround: This is a symptom of FGL-15794. Restart the secondary server. Restart the primary server. Enable StorageCollector.car. You should now be able to create the agent.

Upgrade and Compatibility

Foglight for Storage Management 4.1.0 includes a new version of the underlying Foglight Management Server 5.7.5 and the Foglight Agent Manager 5.8.5.1. This updated Foglight platform provides new features, security improvements, and performance upgrades to Foglight for Storage Management. These changes may impact customizations such as user-created cartridges or custom Groovy scripts. We strongly recommend that you fully test any such components with this release in a pre-production environment before using this release to upgrade production installations of Foglight for Storage Management. See the Foglight 5.7.5 Release Notes for further details.

Select one of the following upgrade paths:

Note: For a new installation, see Getting Started.

Upgrading Foglight for Storage Management to Version 4.1.0

Before you begin, review the licensing notes for your currently installed version:

During this upgrade process, Foglight for Storage Management/vFoglight Storage is upgraded to version 4.1.0.

Important: Upgrading vFoglight Storage 2.x directly to Foglight for Storage Management 4.1.0 is not supported. To upgrade from version 2.x to version 4.0.0, first upgrade to version 3.1.2, and then to version 4.0.0.

To upgrade your existing Foglight for Storage Management installation to version 4.1.0:

  1. Download the Foglight for Storage Management 4.1.0 installation package for your platform from Dell Support.
  2. Create a support bundle from your Management Server. For instructions, see "Managing Support Bundles" in the Administration and Configuration Help.
  3. Back up Foglight by backing up the file system and the Foglight database. For instructions, see "Backing up Foglight" in the Administration and Configuration Help.
Important: If you are using Oracle RAC, you must back up the oracle-ds.xml file (or any other database connection files) before performing the upgrade.
  4. Deactivate all agents from the Administration > Agents > Agent Status dashboard.
  5. Caution: A timing problem has been identified in the Foglight installer’s upgrade process. In cases when a prior version of the Management Server is running certain Foglight for VMware code at installation time, and the Management Server and/or embedded database are not fully shut down, this can prevent the upgrade process from proceeding, causing the installer to display the following message:

Failed to shut down all Foglight processes.
Please stop all server related processes. (fms, embedded mysql, embedded fglam) manually and re-run installer.
        Command (C:\Quest_Software\foglight\bin\fms.exe -w -q) ran completely, exit code: 1.

The following steps are therefore strongly recommended before running the Foglight for Storage Management 4.1.0 installer to upgrade your existing installation:
    1. Manually shut down your Foglight Management Server. Do not depend on the installer to shut down your running Management Server and/or embedded database, due to the timing problem. Ensure that the Management Server has stopped running before launching the Foglight for Storage Management 4.1.0 installer. To verify that all Management Server processes have stopped, type the following command:

      Windows:
          tasklist /v | find "fms"
      Linux:
          ps -C fms

Important: If your Management Server uses an external database, do not stop the database. It is important that it continue to run during the upgrade.
    2. For extra reliability, you must back up the Foglight database, as recommended in the Administration and Configuration Help.
This Foglight for Storage Management 4.1.0 release does not contain the logic that causes the timing issue, so future upgrades will not trigger it.
  6. Launch the installation package for your platform and click Upgrade. Follow the instructions in the installation wizard.
Note: The database upgrade may be time consuming if you have a large topology.
  7. Upgrade any external Agent Managers (the internal Agent Manager is upgraded automatically). For instructions, see the Foglight Upgrade Guide.
  8. Upgrade the following Storage Management agents from the Administration > Agents > Agent Status dashboard: For instructions, see "Deploying Storage Agents after an Upgrade" the Managing Storage in Virtual Environments Installation and Configuration Guide.
  9. Upgrade the VMware Performance Agent. For instructions, see "Upgrading the VMware Performance Agent" in the Foglight Upgrade Guide.

Activating Foglight for Virtualization, Enterprise Edition in Foglight for Storage Management 4.1.0

You can activate a trial version of Foglight for Virtualization, Enterprise Edition from within Foglight for Storage Management.

To upgrade from Foglight for Storage Management to Foglight for Virtualization, Enterprise Edition:

  1. Log in to Foglight for Storage Management 4.1.0.
  2. On the Environment Overview dashboard (Homes > Environment Overview), open the Administer tab, and click Activate Foglight for Virtualization trial license.
Your upgrade to Foglight for Virtualization, Enterprise Edition is complete. From this point on, the Foglight browser interface becomes the main entry point for monitoring your environment. For more information, see the Foglight User Help and the Administration and Configuration Help.

Note: If you do not install a full license before the trial expires, the Foglight for Virtualization, Enterprise Edition functionality is disabled after 45 days. To find out how many days are left for your license, review the information displayed below the time range in the display area.

Licensing Notes for Upgrades

Foglight for Storage Management requires a license. This section describes the license requirements when upgrading.

Upgrading from Foglight for Storage Management 2.5 or later

If you have an active support agreement for Foglight for Storage Management, you are entitled to a free upgrade of your Foglight for Storage Management license. This upgraded license enables operation of the limited Hyper-V support which was added in the 4.0 release of Foglight for Storage Management. Contact your Dell Software sales representative to obtain this important license upgrade.

Upgrading from vFoglight Storage 2.0.x

The vFoglight Storage 2.0.x license does not work with Foglight for Storage Management. If you have an active support agreement, you are entitled to a free upgrade of your Foglight for Storage Management license. For instructions, see Requesting an Upgrade License. If not, contact your Foglight sales representative to purchase a Foglight for Storage Management license.

Note: Your historical data continues to be available after upgrading.

After you install Foglight for Storage Management and its new license, you also need to deploy the following three agent packages on every Foglight Agent Manager running Foglight for Storage Management:

For more information, see "Installing the Permanent Foglight for Storage Management License" in the Managing Storage in Virtual Environments Installation and Configuration Guide.

Migrating from vFoglight Storage 1.6.x

vFoglight Storage 1.6.x is now Foglight for Storage Management. It is no longer a stand-alone product; its functionality is integrated into Foglight.

Important: When migrating from vFoglight Storage 1.6.x to Foglight for Storage Management, all settings and historical data are lost. You are starting from a clean installation.

The vFoglight Storage 1.6.x license does not work with Foglight for Storage Management. If you have an active support agreement, you are entitled to a free upgrade of your Foglight for Storage Management license. For instructions, see Requesting an Upgrade License. If not, contact your Foglight sales representative to purchase a Foglight for Storage Management license.

System Requirements

For information about system requirements for this release, see:

End of Support Announcement

Cartridge for Operating Systems (Revised - April 2015)

The Cartridge for Operating Systems entered Limited Support as of October 2012. General support for this cartridge has now ended. This cartridge was not distributed with the 5.7.5 release of Foglight.

Due to architectural limitations of the Cartridge for Operating Systems agents, certain agents should no longer be used. In particular, the Cartridge for Operating Systems’ SNMP Agent has specific security vulnerabilities. Customers using older (unpatched) operating systems should discontinue use of the SNMP Agent immediately. A new SNMP agent is in active development; please contact your Sales representative for details.
The Operating System agents, as well as the LogFilter, WebMonitor, and NetMonitor utility agents, have equivalent Foglight for Infrastructure agents, which should now be used. We have been working to close functional gaps between the old and new agents. Please contact your Sales or Support representative if you have specific concerns about using these agents.

We are aware of specific feature differences in the Foglight for Infrastructure agents that do not fully replace the FileSystem and AppMonitor agents. At this time there are no known incompatibilities or vulnerabilities in these two agents. We are extending the Limited Support lifetime of these two specific Cartridge for Operating Systems agents until June 2015, for customers using those agents in a pre-existing installation. Support cannot be provided for new deployments of these agents.

We are grateful for the feedback we have received from customers who require functionality provided by the Cartridge for Operating Systems. Those customers who have open support cases for specific compatibility concerns should contact their Support representative for the current status of those requests.

Product Licensing

Foglight for Storage Management includes a trial license. You can activate it on the Homes > Environment Overview dashboard.

When a trial license expires, the trial product stops collecting data. You still have access to historical data. If you want to continue collecting data, you need to purchase a commercial license. If you want to stop collecting data before the trial license expires, deactivate your monitoring agents using the Agent Status dashboard. For more information, see the Foglight Administration and Configuration Guide.

To purchase a full license, contact your Foglight sales representative. You can install purchased licenses either during the 45-day trial or after the trial period has expired. You install and manage licenses using the Manage Licenses dashboard.

To activate a trial or a purchased commercial license:

  1. On the navigation panel, under Dashboards, click Administration > Setup & Support > Manage Licenses.
  2. Click Install.
  3. In the Install License dialog box, click Browse.
  4. In the file browser that appears, specify the location of the license file.
  5. In the Install License dialog box, click Install License.
